Starting up with 15 GMs, out of whom 6 are rated above 2600 and 9 rated above 2575, this GM group by far is the strongest one seen in Fagernes chess history so far. 5 IMs, 3 WGMs, 2 WIMs and 12 FMs also can be found among the 71 participants, and this combined with a median ELO around 2250 provides excellent chances for all kind of title norms. The first round had many exciting games and quite a few surprising game results, although the 15 GMs in the end scored a remarkable 13 wins and 2 draws.

    Rond 1:
FM Frank Buchenau (2269), L.T. Hannover, versus Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) was a somewhat French-like CaroKann opening, in which the young black player bravely snatched both the white center pawns at d4 and e5 with his queen. Another tense struggle followed as black kept the two extra pawns while white kept a pair of bishops and a strong initiative. Still having his king at e8, black spent way too much time and faced a tough uphill struggle with less than five minutes left on the clock after 20 moves. More than 40 years older than his opponent in this game, Buchenau kept up the pressure well and used the chance to make a breakthrough when 14 year old Strand ran seriously short of time. White´s promising attack turned winning as black overlooked a tactical 27. Bxg6! and ended with a decisive material win eight moves later on. Länk till Chess24: FM Frank Buchenau (2269) – Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) 1-0.

The second round of this GM group became another hard-fought one – and another very good round for the GMs. Remarkably enough the only draw on the first eleven boards was a draw between two GMs on the second board. Following this ten GMs are sharing the lead at 2/2, while the other five GMs all can be found among the eleven players at 1,5/2.

    Rond 2:
Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) as white against Jeroen van den Berselaar (2173), HMC den Bosch, succeeded in getting a slight plus from his first rather uncovential opening with 1.d4 2.Nc3 and 3.Bf4. Black gradually took over the initiative and was closer to winning chances with two bishops and six pawns against bishop, knight and six pawns. The double minor piece endgame however became dangerous for black despite his pair of bishops, as he locked his dark-squared bishop in an offside position behind the enemy lines. White and his mobile knight following this missed several winning chances in the fifth hour. When white finally won a pawn black however was over the hill, and had few problems to block down the bishop endgame. Länk till Chess24: Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) – Jeroen van den Berselaar (2173) ½-½.

Remarkably the third round of this GM group also passed without any short draws, although four out of the first six boards in the end had no winner. Remaining players with a 100 % score are Armenian GM Aram Hakobyan and Estonian GM Kaido Kulaots, both winning long and exciting games against GM colleagues today.

Morten Andersen (2190), Odysseus – Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018), Tanums SS/FSS, ½-½. Foto: Tom Eriksen.

    Rond 3:
The Danish representative Morten Andersen (2190), Odysseus, as white against Norwegian junior Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) went for a Catalan approach in a Semi-Slav opening. It worked out well as black spent 95 minutes on the first 16 moves, and white still had the more active pieces on the board. Strand however made good use of the time, as he after exchanging three sets of minor pieces successfully established a passed pawn at d4 and got some counterplay in the open g-file. Following this black was closer to an advantage when a draw was agreed by a sound repetition just before 40 moves. Länk till Chess24: Morten Andersen (2190) – Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) ½-½.

Second half of the double round saw a lot of evening firework in the GM group, although the first board duel between GM Kaido Kulaots and GM Aram Hakobyan was a relatively solid draw. First rated GM Arjun Erigaisi won a great game following a positional exchange sacrifice on the second board, while third rated Nihal Sarin on the third board lost following a dynamite preparation from Turkish GM Emre Can. This round saw several sensational results from young title candidates, as Norwegian FM Jens Evang Ingebretsen punished GM Vahap Sanal for an overambitious winning attempt, while the Ukrainian refugee Semen Mitusov used the black pieces to crush GM Erik Blomqvist. Erigaisi, Hakobyan, Can and Kulaots following this are sharing the lead at 3,5/4, ahead of a crowd of five GMs, one WGM and four FMs at 3,0/4.

Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018), Tanums SS/FSS – Andreas Skotheim (2206), Tønsberg SK, 0-1. Foto: Tom Eriksen.

    Rond 4:
Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) as white against Andreas Skotheim (2206) again went for a rather untheoretical set up with 1.d4 2.Nc3 and 3.Bf4. Skotheim appeared well prepared, and after exchanging all the bishops black had a slight initiative. Black following an instructive majority attack on the queenside got the better pawn structure. Due to his combined pressure against the isolated pawn at d4 and the backward pawn at b2, black got a pleasant pressure in the rook and knight endgame. Sacrificing the b-pawn to exchange of the knights here hardly improved white´s chances, as black in the rook endgame had five against four pawns and a painful pressure against the isolated d-pawn. The game lasted five and a half hour, with 76 moves, but although black took his time he had it all under control after picking up the d4-pawn at move 45. Länk till Chess24: Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) – Andreas Skotheim (2206) 0-1.

This round was a bit mixed as the top three boards all ended up with a draw, two of them true enough following long and hard-fought games, while the next eight boards all got a winner. The only real sensation among them was 16 year old FM Semen Mitusov winning a chaotic attacking battle against GM Sethuraman Sethuraman. As the four players at 3,5/4 made draws against each other, the lead at 4.0/5 following this is shared between seven GMs and one FM – with seven more players following at 3.5/5. With 15 players within half a point at the top of the list, we can definitley expect a very tight and unpredictable run for the top prizes during the next four days.

Stig K Martinsen (2155), Sotra SK – Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018), Tanums SS/FSS, ½-½. Foto: Tom Eriksen.

    Rond 5:
Stig K Martinsen (2155), Sotra SK, as white against Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) came much better from a rare line in the Caro-Kann, and got promising pressure against black´s backward pawn at e6 and the kingside in general. White appeared close to winning as he after 36 moves was a pawn up with a strong pair of bishops. During mutual time pressure Strand however caused some confusion in the white camp with the break 36.--- e5!?. White invited black into the game again, as he at move 40 exchanged his light-squared bishop at d5. The end appearently was close as white at move 43 intervened on d7 with his rook. 14 year old Strand however had prepared a clever defence as he sacrificed his queen for rook and bishop. The remaining position with queen, rook and three pawns versus two rooks, one knight and two pawns obviously was much better for white, but black was close to a fortress defence on the kingside as all the remaining pawns were g- or h-pawns. Running short of time again, Martinsen after exchanging his rook found nothing better than exchanging his queen for the rook and knight. That winning plan however turned out to be a dead end as the remaining pawn endgame with one h-pawn and two g-pawns against one h-pawn and one g-pawn was an easy draw. Strand elegantly demonstrated that by forcing an absolutely safe fortress with pawn at h6 against white pawns at h5 and g6. Länk till Chess24: Stig K Martinsen (2155) – Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) ½-½.

Believe it or not: All the top four boards with players at 4,0/5 were drawn this round, and as three players at 3,5/5 won we now have a record 11 players sharing the lead at 4,5/6! Notably this group includes ten GMs and one FM: 16 year old Ukrainian refugee Semen Mitusov was close to taking the lead alone, as had some pressure as white against GM Alexander Donchenko. Following that draw Mitusov remains on schedule for a GM-norm and far ahead of schedule for an IM-norm. Several other players also are well in the run for title norms as we look forward to three very exciting final rounds in this tournament.

Laurin Percampus Skotheim (2061), Offerspill SK – Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018), Tanums SS/FSS, 0-1. Foto: Tom Eriksen.

    Rond 6:
Highly talented 14 year old Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) was very happy finally to get his first won game in the GM group today, following a four-hour win against Laurin Perkampus (2061), Offerspill SK. The German junior probably was well prepared for Strand´s opening system with 1.d4 2.Nc3 3.Bf4, and due to his center pawns and counterplay in the f-file came better after exchanging two sets of minor pieces. Exchanging off the Perkampus vs Strand queens however was a misunderstanding from a black point of view, as white later got a promising pressure against the black center pawns. As Perkampus was about to run seriously short of time, Strand refused two draw offers and for some moves was a pawn up. As Perkampus succeeded winning back white´s passed e-pawn, the remaining rook endgame with four pawns in each side after all appeared drawish after 36 moves. Black´s position however still was painful as white had both the better pawn structure and the more active king. Demonstrating good endgame technique after the time control, Strand instructively decided the game by winning black´s weak c-pawn, then advance the passed b-pawn on the queenside without losing control over the kingside pawns. Länk till Chess24: Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) – Laurin Percampus Skotheim (2061), Offerspill SK, 1-0.

This round again the top three boards were drawn while the next six boards all got a winner, leaving three players at 5,5/7 ahead of eight players at 5,0/7. GM Alexander Donchenko of Germany and GM Aryan Chopra of India both won very impressive games today, and both also were obvious candidates for top three before the start of the tournament. The 16 year Ukrainian refugee FM Semen Mitusov however was rated as number 28 before the tournament, and remains a true sensation on shared first place after winning as black today. Mitusov following this almost certainly can make a GM norm with 1,0/2 in round 8 and 9, while several other players can reach an IM-norm or WGM-norm if able to score two final wins. In round 8 Mitusov will play white against Chopra, while Donchenko on the second board will get a critical test as black against top rated Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi.

Monika Machlik (2122), Tromsø SK – Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018), Tanums SS/FSS, 1-0. Foto: Tom Eriksen.

    Rond 7:
Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) as white against Monika Machlik (2122), Tromsø SK, remained true to his pet system with 1.d4 2.Nc3 and 3.Bf4. Machlik had prepared a rather unorthdox set up with 3.--- a6 and 4.--- b5, and got a pleasant initiative in the middle game. After the queens were exchanged, some tactical exchanges left black a fairly sound pawn up. White still came up with some counterplay on the queenside in the rooks and minor pieces endgame. After the remaining minor pieces were exchanged as well, the question was whether white´s passed pawn at b6 in the double rook endgame was disturbing enough to save a draw. Advancing the passed pawn to b7 reportedly was a correct plan. If so white made a mistake afterwards, as Machlik after playing Kc7 followed by Rb6 succeeded in winning the key pawn at b7. White true enough soon won back the pawn at e6. Due to black´s passed d-pawn Machlik still had a straightforward win the remaining endgame, with rook and four pawns against rook and three pawns. Länk till Chess24: Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) – Monika Machlik, Tromsø SK, (2122), 0-1

This round also became somewhat mixed as three out of the top five boards were drawn, although none of them lasted less than two hours and only two lasted less than four hours. The only Norwegian hope, GM Frode Urkedal, continues to do very well and won on the sixth board as black against Turkish GM Vahap Sanal. Overall this however was a very good day for the top players from India. On first board 20 year old GM Aryan Chopra as black succeeded in winning a marathon endgame against the young Ukrainian sensation man Semen Mitusov. 41 year old GM Krishnan Sasikiran as white on the third board made the better calculations and won a tough attacking battle against Swedish GM Tiger Hillarp Persson. Still after round eight it remained unclear whether the tournament winner would be a player from India, Germany – or Norway. Chopra at 6,5/8 was leading half a point ahead of Sasikiran, Urkedal and the young German GM Alexander Donchenko, with top round pairings Chopra-Urkedal and Donchenko-Sasikiran coming up for round nine. The remaining norm candidates overall did well on the board in the second last round, but were unlucky with the pairings for the last round. Following this Semen Mitusov will be the only player to score a title norm in this tournament, and he now must win as black against GM Aram Hakoyban in the ninth round to make a GM norm.

Bennett Hagner (2151), Frankfurter 1860 – Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018), Tanums SS/FSS, 1-0. Foto: Tom Eriksen.

    Rond 8:
The young teenager duel between German Bennet Hagner (2151) and Norwegian Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) had a somewhat strange story before the start. Hagner first was to play white against Sverre Lye, while Strand had black against Vladan Nikolic. As both the opponents had to forfeit due to illness, the arbiters asked Hagner and Strand whether they would like a walk over win or instead pleay against each other. Both the young lions wanted to play chess, and this caused no problems for the tournament as they had almost the same sum of points. As the game started, the opening was a Caro-Kann with 3.--- c5?! and white soon got a strong initiative due to his pawn at e5. After opening the kingside with a flying h-pawn, white transferred his queen up to h6 with a winning attack after 32 moves. After 29 moves white had two minutes left on the clock and black four minutes, but by then the position was totally winning for white anyway. Länk till Chess24: Bennett Hagner (2151), Frankfurter 1860 – Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018), Tanums SS/FSS, 1-0.

20 year old Indian GM Aryan Chopra was the man able to decide first prize in round nine: Leading alone at 6.5/8 and playing white against a lower rated opponent qualified as a very promising starting point. It soon turned out that Chopra (very understandably) was not willing to run any big risks, while Norwegian GM Frode Urkedal continued his solid and strong play from the first eight rounds. The top board following this was considered all the more likely to end up with a draw. As both German GM Alexander Donchenko and Indian GM Krishnan Sasikiran had a higher Elo average than Chopra, a winner in their internal meeting on second board could also win the tournament. Donchenko had the white pieces, but played first too carefully and then too recklessly. In the start of the fourth hour Sasikiran had won a pawn with very good chances to win the bishop endgame. Chopra and Urkedal not unexpectedly agreed a draw just before the time control, while Sasikiran played accurately all to the end of his game and won his first black game after five hours in the last round.

    Rond 9:
Vetle Bjørge Strand (2018) as white stayed true to his Veresov system with 1.d4 2.Nc3 3.Bf4 all this tournament. In his last try against Håkon Bentsen (2078), white got a pair of bishops, but still not much of an advantage. Bentsen appeared to have the better preperation, and had spent less than 15 minutes on the clock when the game was agreed a draw in a fairly balanced position after 20 moves. 14 year old Strand much enjoyed this first GM group and appeared fairly well satisfied to win five more Elo points after 3.0/9. 42 year old Bentsen also made a small plus, but still left a bit disappointed after blundering from a won position in the eight round.
